Unit History During William Jenkins' Enlistment

In October it took part in an expedition to Hatcher's Run and in December accompanied General Ayers' (2d) Division of the 5th Corps on another expedition to and beyond the Nottoway River on the line of the Weldon Railroad. Early in January, 1865, Captain Bigelow resigned and Lieutenant Milton succeeded him as captain of the battery. On February 5 the battery was sent on another expedition to Hatcher's Run and was in sight of the action there on that day but was not engaged. From March 4 to March 27 the command the 3d, after turning in two of its guns, it marched through the deserted city of Petersburg and joined House which was reached on the 5th. In this vicinity it remained until April 20 when it started for City Point arriving April 23. About this time it was transferred to the Artillery Reserve, and was attached to the brigade commanded by Maj. Charles A. Phillips, formerly commander of the 5th Massachusetts Battery. On May 2 the 9th Battery started on its way northward, passing over most of the well known battlefields of the Army of the Potomac and reaching the defenses of Washington on the 13th. On May 29 the guns and equipment were turned in, and on June 1 the men entrained for Boston. Arriving on the 3d, they went at once to Galloup's Island where three days later they were mustered out of the United States service.
