Department of Massachusetts

Founded in 1881, the SUVCW is a congressionally chartered charitable fraternal organization that preserves the history and legacy of the Union veterans who fought during the Civil War to preserve the Union and end slavery.

When you join the SUVCW, you enter a national network of men who form lifelong bonds, honor their heroic ancestors, and promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism in their communities. Based on the principles of Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty, we accept both descendants of Civil War veterans and non-descendants.

The Department of Massachusetts is one of 31 Departments within the SUVCW. There are currently 12 community based Camps throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts whose members are dedicated to the principles of the GAR β€” Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty.

Our Camps are involved in local activities such as Civil War veteran grave registration, cemetery restorations, Memorial Day observances, grave or marker rededications, living history education, and much more.
